Revisiting the Ethylene Carbonate–Propylene Carbonate Mystery with Operando Characterization

چکیده

The “ethylene carbonate (EC)–propylene (PC) mystery” has puzzled electrochemists for decades. Surprisingly, the minor structural difference between PC and EC, a methyl vis-à-vis proton, prevents unlike EC to form stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on carbon (C), which along with popularity of impeded development Li-ion batteries many years. Despite several hypotheses, fundamental reason remains debated largely due lack sufficient experimental evidence. Herein, SEI formed as result reductions are analyzed by two state-of-the-art operando techniques, online electrochemical mass spectrometry quartz crystal microbalance dissipation monitoring. Although both EC- PC-based electrolytes appear have virtually identical reaction pathways, is reduced much more extensively than forms thicker SEI. However, while derived from electrode, reduction products redissolve in leaving bare C electrode behind. presented study illustrates complex scheme competing electro-/chemical reactions behind formation provides further scientific details needed eventually consensus processes governing electrode/electrolyte interphases batteries.

Dipole-bound anions of highly polar molecules: ethylene carbonate and vinylene carbonate.

Results of experimental and theoretical studies of dipole-bound negative ions of the highly polar molecules ethylene carbonate (EC, C3H4O3, mu=5.35 D) and vinylene carbonate (VC, C3H2O3, mu=4.55 D) are presented. These negative ions are prepared in Rydberg electron transfer (RET) reactions in which rubidium (Rb) atoms, excited to ns or nd Rydberg states, collide with EC or VC molecules to produ...

The Interaction of Ethylene with Surface Carbonate and Hydroxide Intermediates on Silver

The surface chemistry of the intermediates formed from the adsorption of CO, and Hz0 on an oxygen-atom-covered Ag( 110) surface was investigated with surface spectroscopic techniques. Carbon dioxide complexed with adsorbed oxygen atoms to form a surface carbonate intermediate, and the associative adsorption of water led to the formation of surface hydroxides. COz adsorption on the oxygen atom c...

Critical behavior of the banded-unbanded spherulite transition in a mixture of ethylene carbonate with polyacrylonitrile.

We investigate the transition from unbanded to banded spherulitic growth in mixtures of ethylene carbonate with polyacrylonitrile. By carefully considering systematic errors, we show that the band spacing diverges with a power-law form showing scaling over nearly two decades. We also observe that the bands disorder as the transition point is approached. The critical exponent is nonclassical. On...
